How long does the procedure take?
PRP procedure – platelet rich plasma takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. You may also be referred for further injections under diagnostic ultrasound by the radiologist.
How long before I can see the benefits of treatment?
This is a regeneration procedure and takes a few months to have a full effect, approximately 4 to 6 weeks should have at least 50% improvement, virtual full improvement by three months. There may require a strengthening programme of another month.
Can I do exercise/go to the gym while having this treatment?
It is advisable to not do too strenuous exercise for the first 4 to 6 weeks while healing is occurring. Graduated gentle exercise can occur from end of week 1-2. From week 6 post procedure and increasing graduated exercise programme is recommended.
How long does the treatment last?
For PRP and X cell therapy treatment usually lasts 12-18 months and may then require a booster treatment in some conditions such as osteoarthritis. However, with tendon tears the goal is for the treatment to be curative and no further treatment required.
What are the risks of treatment?
All treatments involving injections have the potential risk of infection. A best practice method is used at the point of taking blood and at the point of injecting into the site of injury/degeneration. Other risks may be involved for specific conditions, for instance anatomical sites near nerves et cetera. These will be discussed by the doctor at the time before commencing treatment and a consent form is required to be signed by the patient.
